Are new Google E2EE emails really end-to-end encrypted? Kinda, but not really.

Or for that matter, sending a phishing email stating that the IDP has reset and to use this handy link to re-authenticate.

Wealthy Americans have death rates on par with poor Europeans

Does anyone know if there have been studies looking at more than just life expectancy in this manner, such as quality of life expectancy? I'm thinking things like general mobility, independent living, drug dependence, etc.

How automakers like Ford, VW, Stellantis are reacting to Trump’s 25% tariff

The difference here is that "at-cost" is a lot cheaper for Ford than for a lot of their competitors in the US. So if they're all making the same money off features and telemetry, the trick is to figure out how to incentivize the dealerships to move product WHILE incentivizing customers to buy...

Are new Google E2EE emails really end-to-end encrypted? Kinda, but not really.

Seems to me that such a system could work just as well with passkeys and tokens, couldn't it? Infrastructure that's already in place? Or is the long-term goal here to allow people to have their own KACL or use a public one they trust?

How automakers like Ford, VW, Stellantis are reacting to Trump’s 25% tariff

Ford has realized that the vehicle is no longer where they make their money... now they make their money on the add-on features and the telemetry they can sell.

What is “MicroSD Express,” and why is it mandatory for the Nintendo Switch 2?

I've had fake products through Best Buy as well. But at least (like with Amazon) they're pretty good about accepting returns. Never had an issue with Memory Express.

How automakers like Ford, VW, Stellantis are reacting to Trump’s 25% tariff

Aurich: I think your graphic was a classic... with the A headline of "How Automakers Like Ford VW Stellantis Are Reacting to Trump's 25 Tariff". Unfortunately, it appears the algorithm has settled on the B headline of "Employee pricing for all, tariffs on the sticker: OEMs react to tariffs"...

Trump official in Signal flap also used Gmail for gov’t messages, report says

Here's a tangential question: Doesn't the US Military use DLP monitoring on their email accounts, such that any reply containing classified data to a non-secure email address would get bounced and flagged to security?

Unshittification: 3 tech companies that recently made my life… better

Totally agree. And the hard part these days is often finding those communities, as they for some reason don't show up well in searches and on social platforms. So maybe, along with highlighting good experiences, we should be making more of an effort to link people into existing communities...

“I no longer hack Paypals”: DOGE staffer’s hacker past raises red flags

Funny thing is, you can request a new SSN if you've been victim of identity theft. At this point, most Americans have been the victim of identity theft multiple times over, whether they're aware of it or not. But the SSN is only 9 digits long (although thankfully that's now randomized instead...

Unshittification: 3 tech companies that recently made my life… better

Indeed. When I saw the names Nate was referencing, I thought (in the first two examples) Augh! Run away! In my 35+ years involved in digital audio, I've learned to ignore anything that depends on DRM, no matter how well it works or how good it sounds. There's a reason sites like...

“I no longer hack Paypals”: DOGE staffer’s hacker past raises red flags

I grew up in an earlier era but spent time in the forums where that sort of tech kid went... usually DM-ing them as an external conscience reminding them that what they do on the Internet is public forever and they are NOT anonymous. Yeah, I was that guy. I generally found two types of tech...

Gemini hackers can deliver more potent attacks with a helping hand from… Gemini

Probably. It may also be in a supporting database that a Gemini agent has access to, and can be tricked into accessing and regurgitating without the regular safety checks.

Apple updates all its operating systems, brings Apple Intelligence to Vision Pro

My tipping point will be when they move from announced opt-out to unannounced opt-out. If someone's already said they don't want something, silently re-enabling it should be grounds for a (successful) lawsuit, especially if it has privacy implications.

Computer scientist goes silent after FBI raid and purging from University website

How I take this is that the arrest(s) were with a FEMA court order, and the only thing IU could legally do is remove mention of him from their faculty/website as a canary. Beyond that... could be xenophobia, could be Chinese espionage, could be something totally unrelated but still National...

France fines Apple €150M for “excessive” pop-ups that let users reject tracking

While repeat confirmations is indeed not appropriate, France has glossed over something here: the complaint was brought by advertisers on behalf of small businesses financing their apps via the ad network. The complaint is that by having a blanket confirmation in addition to any that the apps...
